An opportunity to explore the basics of NLP in the context of communication and how we might adapt this (with integrity) to increase rapport, gain understanding and influence more effectively.
Founded by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) was developed around a curiosity about how outstanding people (for example, athletes) got their results.
Ultimately, NLP is about mindset. Your mindset will be affected by how you see the world through your filters. Your filters will include, amongst other things, your memories, your language, your values, your beliefs, your attitudes, your decisions, etc.
Because the mind/body is one system, your mindset will affect your physiology and this will create a ‘state’. As you will probably know, some states are resourceful, whilst others are unresourceful. Both will determine how you respond to situations around you and they will either have a negative or positive impact on how you perform.
We will look at three concepts in particular:
Representational Systems: We have five basic senses: visual, auditory, kinaesthetic , olfactory and gustatory. In NLP, these are referred to as representational systems or modalities. For each of these modalities, we can have finer distinctions (known as submodalities). We use these to ‘code’ and give meaning to the experiences we have.
Changing submodalities is a very effective and powerful way of changing the meaning of an experience.
Resourceful States: Anchoring is a natural process deliberately, to take more control over how you think and feel in the present, so you are in the driving seat of your thoughts and behaviour. This technique teaches you how to find yourself in a ‘resourceful state’ wherever you are.
Well-formed outcomes: Whatever you want, the place to start is always with your outcome, and making sure it satisfies a number of conditions so it is a well-formed outcome. The NLP model enables us to go beyond mere ‘goal setting’ into the actual ‘programming’ of our minds. This will help drive us towards our desired goal. The more attention we pay to the submodalities, the more specifically refined it becomes. The finer our distinctions, the more clearly and creatively we can design our future.
At the end of this workshop, you will:
- Have a basic knowledge of the NLP framework and model of communication.
- Use this to reframe situations/events so you can find different solutions, one of which will work.
- Be in charge of your attitude/emotions by using submodalities, so you can bring about a resourceful state when you need it. (eg. Confidence, calm, etc)
- Know how to anchor this resourceful state, so that you can access it immediately, at any time.
- Create a well-formed outcome which makes absolutely sure that you ‘language’ yourself in such a way as to drive your very neurology and physiology towards obtaining your desired goal.
- With your peers, find practical ways to incorporate what you have learnt into your working/personal life.
